Devastating Storm Claims Lives and Destroys Property

May 20, 2013

A series of powerful tornadoes ripped through the central and southern United States on Monday, May 20, 2013, leaving a trail of devastation and claiming the lives of at least 46 people. The tornadoes struck several states, including Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, and Missouri.

The strongest tornado of the outbreak was an EF5 tornado that touched down in Moore, Oklahoma, a suburb of Oklahoma City. The tornado was on the ground for 39 minutes and traveled 17 miles, destroying everything in its path. At least 24 people were killed in Moore, including seven children.

Other tornadoes also caused widespread damage and loss of life. In El Reno, Oklahoma, a tornado killed nine people and destroyed dozens of homes and businesses. In Van Buren County, Arkansas, a tornado killed five people and injured 20. In Cleburne County, Alabama, a tornado killed three people and injured 10.

The tornado outbreak was one of the deadliest in recent history. The last time a tornado killed more than 40 people in the United States was in 1999, when an F5 tornado killed 36 people in Oklahoma City.

The tornadoes have left a lasting impression on the communities they struck. Many people have lost their homes, their loved ones, and their livelihoods. The recovery process will be long and difficult, but the people of the United States will come together to help those who have been affected.
